Museum Welcome Assistant
Location: Plymouth (PL4)
Pay: £13.26 per hour
Hours: Ad‑hoc shifts between 09:00–17:45 (including lunch‑cover shifts)
Assignment: Ongoing temporary role (no guaranteed hours) Weekend & School Holiday Availability Required

The Box is looking for flexible Welcome Hosts to support visitor experience across its museum, galleries, shop and historic properties. This role is ideal for someone seeking top‑up hours, who enjoys working with the public and thrives in a front‑of‑house environment.

About the Role
As a Welcome Host, you’ll be part of the Operations Assistants Team, ensuring visitors receive a warm welcome and an outstanding experience across The Box and associated heritage sites.

Key Responsibilities
Visitor Welcome & Information
  • Act as a friendly, knowledgeable first point of contact for all visitors
  • Provide information, guidance and support, directing visitors to relevant staff when needed
  • Promote a positive, memorable experience that encourages repeat visits
Sales & Commercial Support
  • Staff the shop and other sales points, including: Mayflower Gallery / Media Lab, St Luke’s entrance & Smeaton’s Tower
  • Sell tickets, memberships, retail products and online items
  • Confidently ask for donations and collect visitor survey data
  • Handle cash and card payments (approx. £600k pa across the team)
  • Maintain high presentation standards in all commercial areas
Operational Support
  • Assist with the smooth running of The Box 7 days a week
  • Support gallery operations, including cleaning, security and visitor flow
  • Provide invigilation and basic technical support
  • Assist visitors accessing collections and archives
  • Support events and gallery openings outside normal hours
  • Act as a key holder and emergency contact when required

Essential Skills & Experience
 
  • Excellent customer service and communication abilities
  • Confident, outgoing and comfortable engaging with visitors
  • Willing and able to ask for donations and collect visitor survey feedback
  • Flexible approach to working hours, including weekends and school holidays
  • Strong ICT and keyboard skills, including Microsoft Office, EPOS and CRM systems
  • Team‑focused attitude with a positive, can‑do approach
  • Able to follow safety, security and operational procedures accurately
  • Interest in arts, culture or history (advantageous but not essential)
  • Experience working in a busy, customer‑focused environment
  • Confident handling financial transactions
  • Competent using information systems such as EPOS, CRM or similar

Desirable Experience
  • Retail or sales experience
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Experience in museums, arts, culture or visitor attractions (not essential)
