JOB DESCRIPTION
A Security Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining security solutions to protect information systems, networks, and data from unauthorized access, cyber threats, and attacks. Security Engineers work to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of digital assets within an organization.
QUALIFICATIONS
Academic qualifications may not be required, though some GCSEs/S grades or an equivalent qualification may be an advantage. NVQs/SVQs for Providing Security, Emergency and Alarm Systems are available at Levels 2 and 3. Apprenticeships combining practical work experience and technical training are available at Levels 2 and 3. Entrants must have normal colour vision and security clearance.
TASKS
- Conduct risk assessments to identify potential vulnerabilities and threats to the organization's information systems..
- Design and implement security architecture for networks, systems, and applications, considering industry best practices and compliance requirements..
- Configure and manage firewalls to control and monitor incoming and outgoing network traffic, preventing unauthorized access and mitigating security risks..
- Implement and manage intrusion detection and prevention systems to identify and respond to suspicious activities or cyber threats..
- Conduct regular vulnerability assessments and manage the remediation of identified vulnerabilities to strengthen the security posture..
- Develop and enforce security policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure consistent and secure practices throughout the organization..
- Develop and implement incident response plans to effectively address and mitigate security incidents, including data breaches or cyber-attacks..
- Provide security awareness training to employees, educating them on best practices and potential risks to enhance the organization's overall security posture..
- Implement encryption techniques and strong authentication methods to safeguard sensitive data and control access to systems..
- Conduct security audits to assess compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards. Ensure that security controls meet legal and contractual obligations..
- Implement security monitoring tools and technologies to detect and respond to security events in real time..
- Deploy and manage security software, including antivirus programs, endpoint protection, and security information and event management (SIEM) systems..
- Configure and manage network security devices, such as routers, switches, and intrusion prevention systems, to protect against network-based threats..
- Conduct penetration testing to simulate cyber attacks and identify weaknesses in systems and applications..
- Collaborate with other IT and business units to align security measures with organizational goals and objectives..
- Stay informed about the latest security trends, threats, and technologies through ongoing training and professional development..
